
Charles T. Downing
December 2, 1869 - May 10, 1951
Charles T. Downing was born in Wharton, NJ and graduated from Newton High School in 1908. After graduation, Mr. Downing taught at Hopewell School in Sparta Township for two years. He then began the study of law in the office of John Loosey. On December 4, 1914 he was admitted to the New Jersey Bar. Once admitted, Mr. Downey set up his own practice until entering a partnership with Levi Morris on January 1, 1917.
Mr. Downing, noted for his keen mind and fluent speech, was frequently sought as an after dinner speaker for many local functions and organizations.
Active in politics and the community, Mr. Downing held, among other positions:

Supreme Court Commissioner and Special Master in Chancery
Chancellor of the Newton Lodge of Elks
New Jersey State Assemblyman
Democratic State Committeeman
Prosecutor for the Town of Newton

Member of the Board, Newton Methodist Church
