Katie Holmes seeks child support order modification

New Jersey residents may have heard about a development in the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorce. Holmes is reportedly seeking an alteration to the child support payment arrangement involving her former husband and their nine-year-old daughter. The original support payment is $400,000 each year, but according to published reports, Holmes is preparing to return to court to seek a higher amount. One source reported that although the actress takes as many jobs as possible, she is unable to maintain the lifestyle for her daughter that she had during the marriage.

It has elsewhere been reported that the actor has not seen his daughter in person for more than two years. An inside source claims that the adoption of extracurricular activities and increased travel needs will only increase the annual amount the child requires. Cruise has previously claimed that his busy filming schedule made it impossible for him to spend more time with his daughter.

Cruise reportedly spends a significant amount of time in London, while Holmes and their daughter travel between Los Angeles and New York City. Some have claimed that Holmes has shifted in her demeanor to become less passive than she was during the marriage. The source claimed that the actress felt suffocated within the marriage but is no longer afraid to pursue more money for her child.

Child support disputes between high-profile parents are often more difficult because of the publicity that they get. Nonetheless, any custodial parent may still find that the original support agreement is no longer enough as the child ages and his or her needs change. A divorce lawyer may be able to provide assistance to a parent who is seeking a modification by demonstrating to the judge that a higher payment is justified.
