Rapper's ex seeks additional child support

New Jersey residents may have heard that the ex of rapper 50 Cent has requested additional child support for their 19-year-old son. Though in most cases, child support commitment ends when the child turns 18, in this case, financial support for 50 Cent's son will remain in place until he turns 21.

According to reports, the rapper's ex is seeking to increase the rapper's $6,700 monthly child support payment to help with their son's college tuition. The woman's lawyer claimed that since the issue is under litigation he was unable to comment on any other reasons for requesting the increase, however, he did express hope that 50 Cent would continue to provide financially for his son.

The family has undergone some public discord in the past. In 2014, 50 Cent did not attend his son's high school graduation. Some of the rapper's text messages to his son were made public, and in them, the rapper disowned his son for refusing to open the door when he went to visit him. The rapper's ex has also publicly attacked the rapper via Instagram, making light of his financial troubles.

Child support agreements center on making sure a child's standard of living reflects that of his parents and that the child's financial needs are met. Needs are not only defined as clothing, food and shelter, but they include education, recreational activities and other things that might be considered luxuries but that fit with the higher-income parent's standard of living. Finally, the child's best interests are considered, as well as the parents' incomes.
