Preparing for a divorce settlement meeting

New Jersey residents who are in the process of a divorce may find that a settlement meeting in a negotiated divorce is preferable to a litigated divorce. New Jersey family law professionals can help a couple negotiate a divorce fairly.

Couples who engage in a settlement meeting because they are doing a negotiated divorce may find that the divorce happens more quickly. A settlement meeting allows the couple to negotiate on key issues outside of court. There are some things to keep in mind in order to prepare for a settlement meeting, though.

First, emotions should be kept out of the meeting. Divorce is an extremely emotional time for individuals. Although it may feel good to express what you think about your soon-to-be ex, these emotional outbursts distract from the business at hand. The purpose of this meeting is to move forward and not get stuck on what caused it in the first place.

Additionally, a willingness to compromise can prove beneficial. Couples need to be able to see both sides of the situation to come up with fair custody arrangements, spousal support and other considerations. The settlement meeting is the perfect opportunity for both parties to be heard and come to an equitable agreement.

Finally, a settlement meeting is a good time to have questions answered in an informal setting. Since there are so many legal terms and jargon involved in divorce, things can quickly get confusing. A legal professional who is in the meeting can answer all questions regarding what is happening and what it all means for the settlement. It is important for couples to know exactly what is going on, as this divorce affects them not just now but in the future as well. More than one settlement meeting may be necessary, but they are all good steps in reaching a satisfactory conclusion. A legal professional skilled in family law can help a couple negotiate a divorce and reach a fair settlement.
