IKEA recalls lamps for children in New Jersey

An injury to a child is something that all parents want to avoid. This is especially true for poorly constructed products that could have easily been remedied by the manufacturer or seller. The challenge for many parents is the variety of products that are available. Some companies do not exhibit proper safeguards. When a company produces a product that leads to a permanent or long-term injury, the child and parents are able to claim negligence. A child injury can be very serious. It's important to be prepared for any long-term care that will be necessary for the child.

IKEA recalled its children's SMILA-series lamps that are wall-mounted because the cord to the lamp posed a danger of strangulation. A 16-month old child died in a crib after getting tangled up in the cord. In another incident, a 15-month-old got tangled up in the lamp's cord and nearly suffocated to death. There were 2.9 million lamps sold in the United States and a total of 23 million sold worldwide. All the units were recalled, including those in New Jersey.

A defective product is something that most companies will work to help correct or recall. Product liability occurs when a defective or dangerous product is released on the market. Typically product liability laws are based on the state, so they will differ from place to place. In New Jersey, there are different ways to go about receiving compensation for a child injury caused by a poor product. A poor manufacturing defect can have long-lasting implications for your child.

Some companies will take measures to correct poor products that are posing a danger to children. IKEA is taking that step with its SMILA-series lamps because of a few cases of strangulation. However, some companies will demonstrate negligence by not taking proper steps to provide a safe product. Fortunately, there are ways victims can be adequately compensated for any permanent or long-term care because of negligence.
