Staying safe on a motorcycle

New Jersey is home to many motorcycle riders who take pride in the freedom that riding can bring. This enhanced freedom comes along with some enhanced risk on the road. Motorcycle riders are 30 times more likely to be killed in a vehicle accident than drivers of other types of vehicles. A few valuable safety tips can keep riders safe and protected on the road.

One of the best ways to reduce the risk of a motorcycle accident is to invest in good training. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation sponsors training classes throughout the country. These courses cover topics like defensive driving, rider safety and emergency maneuvers.

It is also important to invest in the right kind of equipment for riding. A helmet approved by the Department of Transportation is a necessity. A sturdy leather jacket, durable boots and gloves are also smart choices. This gear can help riders deal with everything from cold temperatures to road debris, and they provide extra protection in the event of an accident.

Regular and thorough motorcycle inspections are a reliable way to prevent problems on the road. Before each ride, riders should closely inspect indicator lights, tire pressure and headlights to make sure they are all working properly.

Motorcycle accidents can be more dangerous than other types of vehicle accidents. Motorcycles provide less driver protection than other vehicles do, and inattentive motorists might not check for the presence of motorcycles before making a turn. An attorney may be able to help a motorcyclist who is injured in an accident. By using police crash investigations and witness testimony, an attorney may be able to show that another driver caused the collision through negligence. By doing so, the injured victim may be able to recover compensation for any accident-related damages.
