FedEx driver liable for accident that left 10 dead

New Jersey residents may be interested to learn that, on May 22, it was announced that a motor vehicle accident that occurred in Northern California was deemed by a California Highway Patrol Accident to have been caused by a FedEx driver. According to the authorities, the crash between the FedEx truck and a bus, which occurred on April 5, 2014, left 10 people dead, five of whom were students from the Los Angeles area.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol stated that law enforcement agencies investigated the incident for about 13 months prior to making the determination that the driver was liable. The spokesperson stated that it was not known why the driver, who was also fatally injured, caused the crash, though it appeared that alcohol, medication or cellphone use were not factors.

The spokesperson also stated that authorities could not determine if the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel or if he had an underlying medical condition. In addition to the 10 individuals who were killed, 39 others suffered injuries.

A commercial vehicle accident caused by a negligent driver can result in serious injuries for those who are involved. In some cases, these injuries could be life-altering and prevent an injured victim from living a full life or obtaining gainful employment for an extended period of time. An attorney can use the results of the police investigation reports and other evidence such as witness testimony to establish the responsibility for the accident. Injured victims often seek damages in a personal injury lawsuit that include the costs of medical care and treatment.
