New technology could prevent truck accidents

New Jersey drivers who hate being stuck behind big trucks may one day be able to pass them more safely and get on their way faster, thanks to new technology that has been tested in Argentina by electronics giant Samsung. It is designed to give drivers a better view of the road in front of the rig, showing when the road is clear to pass, a boon to drivers who often encounter large trucks on two-lane roads.

Samsung touts the new technology as a way to avoid truck accident injuries and fatalities. The "see-through" concept truck was tested in Argentina because of the country's reputation for having the highest incidence of traffic accidents in the world. The majority of roads in Argentina are two-lane highways, making this country an ideal test case. The prototype is no longer in service as Samsung prepares for further testing of the technology.

A wireless camera connected to the truck's grill is designed to give drivers behind the truck a driver's-eye view of the road by streaming the camera's feed to four large-screen monitors mounted on the back of the truck. This gives drivers advance warning of oncoming traffic or letting drivers see when passing maneuvers can be executed safely. However, some critics question the viability of Samsung's "see-through" technology, pointing to driverless cars as a better candidate for safety testing.

An attorney representing an injured victim in the aftermath of a truck accident may wish to begin by reviewing the truck driver's history, maintenance reports on the vehicle and the results of the police investigation to get a better picture of what happened. If negligence on the part of the driver or the company itself can be demonstrated, a personal injury lawsuit might result in the responsible parties being required to compensate the victim for the damages that were incurred.
