Motorcyclists need to drive defensively

New Jersey bikers know that while riding a motorcycle can be fun, it can also be dangerous. Motorcyclists are likely to suffer more serious injuries in an accident than they would if they were riding in an automobile. Both driving defensively and wearing safety gear can help to prevent accidents.

Beginning riders should take a course on motorcycle riding before they hit the road. Safety gear, such as specially made jackets and suits, help protect the skin from road rash and other injuries should an accident occur. A helmet to protect the head is another must. Serious head injuries can occur when an unprotected head slams into the ground.

Motorcyclists need to be aware of what other drivers are doing. For example, the most common motorcycle accident occurs when an automobile driver turns left in front of a biker. This could be because the driver isn't paying attention or, misjudges the motorcycle's speed. An alert motorcycle rider can take evasive action by slowing down and preparing to brake. Riders also should be aware of what cars behind and beside them are doing in case they have to take quick evasive action. Reducing speed is the best option since it will decrease the impact should an accident occur.

No matter how responsibly a biker rides, it may not be enough to prevent a motorcycle accident since the rider has no control over what a motorist does. Riders and passengers who suffer injuries when a negligent driver causes an accident may qualify for compensation. A personal injury attorney may be able to explain the process and help them attain this compensation from an insurance company.
